Ruben was born September 9, 1934 on the farm in Vivian Township to August and Minnie (Schwarz) Groskreutz, the youngest of three boys. Ruben attended Waseca County School District #47, a one-room country school, completing 8th grade. Ruben went on to farm with his father until enlisting into the US Army in 1958. After serving in Germany he was honorably discharged and returned home to marry Ellen Van Hove on June 26, 1959 in Buffalo Center, IA. Together they raised 5 children on the same farm where he grew up. Ruben continued to farm, but also worked seasonally at Del Monte in Wells for years and later full-time at BirdsEye in Waseca, where he worked for over 30 years. In retirement he was able to keep busy with his garden, he enjoyed traveling to see family, participating in multiple card clubs, and spending time watching his birds and squirrels out the back window. Ruben enjoyed playing softball with the church league along with hunting, fishing, and bowling. For many years Ruben also served as an usher at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Through the years he enjoyed supporting his children's involvement in the 4-H program and also cheering on his children and grandchildren at their many sporting and racing events.
Ruben is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ellen; children Lyle (Lisa) of Eagle Lake, MN, and their sons Mike of Eagle Lake and Derek of Madison Lake; Roxanne (Matt) Brey of Watertown, SD, and their children Jeremy, Amber and Nathan; Darrin (Cindi) of Tomah, WI, and their sons Dustin and Logan; Mindy (Jared) Detloff of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, NJ, and their sons Marcus, Joshua and Noah; brothers and sisters-in-law; Marie Groskreutz, John (Jacki) Van Hove, Larry Van Hove, Judy (Vernal) Gullord, Dick (Rebecca) Van Hove, Gerald (Ellen) Molskness; and many nephews and nieces.
